COURSE PURPOSE
This unit standard is for those people giving an induction of health and safety principles to new personnel and the person credited with this unit standard is able to explain the duties of both the employees and employers with regard to Occupational Safety and Heath in the workplace. Learners will be able to understand the requirements that apply to persons entering the workplace and performing any duties therein as well as the requirements for the use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), housekeeping and emergency procedures that apply to the workplace.
WHAT YOU’LL LEARN
The qualifying learner is capable of providing a comprehensive explanation of both employer and employee responsibilities related to occupational safety and health in the workplace, ensuring that all parties understand their roles in maintaining a safe work environment. They can outline the general safety rules that are essential for preventing accidents and injuries in the workplace, covering aspects such as hazard identification, safe work practices, and adherence to regulatory standards. Furthermore, the learner can describe the use and application of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), detailing how various types of PPE should be correctly worn and maintained to protect individuals from workplace hazards. They also recognise the critical need for good housekeeping practices, explaining how proper organisation and cleanliness contribute to a safer and more efficient work environment. Additionally, the learner is proficient in explaining and applying emergency procedures, including evacuation plans, first aid protocols, and reporting mechanisms, to ensure preparedness and a prompt, effective response in case of emergencies.
